Munich travel guide

The Bavarian city of Munich is located in the South of Germany just 50 kilometres north of the Alps. Although not the capital of Germany visitors to Munich would be forgiven for thinking that it was.
Munich, unlike many other German Cities seems to have been relatively untouched by the Second World War and each street is a remarkable tribute to both Baroque and Rococo architecture. The main square, Marienplatz is where the tourists congregate to get a look at the Frankirch, with its brass domed twin towers and both the old and new Town Halls. Visitors wait anxiously at 11 am each day to see the Rathaus Glockenspiel clock come to life with its 32 life size figurines playing out stories from the 16th century.
Munich is of course famous the world over for its Bavarian beer gardens and the annual Oktoberfest. The two week long festival takes place not in October as you would imagine but instead at the end of September and incorporates endless beer tents, amusement park and other festival activities.
The location of Munich makes it a great spot for exploring other areas of Bavaria and the South of Germany including the stunning Starnberg Lake and the sobering experience of the Dachau Concentration Camp.
