The cuisine of Germany varies incredibly from region to region with each area having its own specialities and culinary preferences. Breakfast is an important part of the day in Germany and at weekends families all over Germany spend whole mornings enjoying plentiful breakfast meals made up of Salami, cured hams, cheeses and breads. Bread is a fundamental part of the German diet and it is no wonder that there are over 300 different types of German bread ranging from Sour dough through to the Black breads such as Pumpernickel. The Pretzel bread biscuit also originates from Southern Germany where it is known as Brezel. Sausages play a big part in the life of the German diet; the country is home to over 1500 varieties from Bratwurst to Franfurters. A popular Berlin dish is Currywurst, boiled Bratwurst sausage covered with ketchup and curry powder and served with French fries. Sauerkraut is probably one of the first things that comes to mind when people outside of Germany think of German food. This finely sliced pickled cabbage is available all over the country and is probably one of the largest exported culinary products of the Germany. International cuisine is available throughout Germany and both Oriental and Mediterranean restaurants can be found in abundance in all the main cities. Fast food is as popular in Germany as any other country in the world and it has its fair share of ‘Burger Joints’. One of the most popular sources of fast food in Germany is the Turkish Doner Kebab, invented by Turkish immigrants in Berlin.  Stollen The Germans like their cakes and pastries and during festivities you can expect to witness vast arrays and assortments of cakes. One popular German cake is Stollen, a German bred-like Christmas cake originating from Dresden. The Germans are very proud of their beer and consider it to be amongst the best in the world. The Quality and choice of beer in Germany is high with a number of local regional breweries producing some very interesting and special brews. The most popular and common of beers in Germany are Pilsner and Lager. Most of the wine production in Germany is centred around the Rhine where the climate and soil is ideal for grape growing. One of the better known Germans wines from the region is the white wine Riesling.
